AUTOWAR25 Morning Edition
1. No warning again: Ukraine says a partner alert missed the first ballistic wave on Kyiv; Rubio points to an earlier "software problem"
Zelensky posted that "another Russian ballistic missile attack came in several waves overnight, and once again, there was no early warning from our partners." Russia fired 16 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and the surrounding region, and Ukraine's Air Force counted 269 attack drones nationwide, 59 of them jet-powered.
- Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said no partner warning came before the 23:00 wave (4 PM ET Sun.), but one did arrive before the 03:00 wave (8 PM ET Sun.). "Our experts are looking into this together with our partners, as this is not the first time such a situation has occurred" (Ukrainska Pravda).
- Rubio, in Samarkand, as quoted by RFE/RL's Alex Raufoglu: "I don't know exactly what happened last night. I know a few nights ago, there was a software problem involving an early warning system." He said "there's been no pause." The Guardian reports he said European Command is looking into it, and that Ukraine says it got no warning on at least three days in the past week.
- Air Force tally via Kyiv Post: 247 targets shot down or suppressed by 9 a.m. local, including 243 drones and four cruise missiles, with hits at 25 locations. A 21-year-old woman was killed in Kyiv, Chernihivska metro station was damaged, and a woman was killed in Irpin.
- Zelensky separately told Bloomberg that Ukraine gets about 12 Patriot missiles a month (per a @Defence_blog post; we haven't read the Bloomberg piece). Updates PM #1.
2. Lithuania's prime minister: the drone that crashed Sunday was a Ukrainian FPV carrying explosives; guard raised at 15+ critical sites after the Starlink arson
After Monday's National Security Commission meeting, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said (LRT, in Lithuanian) that the drone was an FPV of Ukrainian origin. He said the debris and Ukraine's own notice that it had lost a drone confirm that, and that there is "no doubt it carried explosives."
- Radar tracked the drone, but bad weather prevented visual contact. Investigators are still working out why it crashed and detonated.
- Starting Monday, vigilance is raised at more than 15 critical sites of state significance.
- He said the arson at Vilnius premises used by SpaceX for Starlink equipment involved Molotov cocktails and is being treated as sabotage. The antennas didn't burn, and a control unit was slightly scorched.
- President Nausėda's national security adviser said Lithuania has "credible evidence" the drone crossed in from Poland (@LRTenglish). The PM's remarks are our translation from Lithuanian. Updates PM #2.
3. Australia arms its Ghost Shark undersea drone with Altius aerial-drone swarms, up to 12 sea mines and special-forces kit
Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said in Sydney on Monday that after secret trials, three Ghost Shark payloads have been approved to "do things we don't want humans to do." CNA (Reuters) reports them as up to 12 sea mines, special-forces equipment, and Anduril's Altius drone, which launches at sea to form reconnaissance and strike swarms.
- Conroy: "Not only could there be Ghost Sharks in those shipping containers, but those Ghost Sharks now have teeth." He said "a range of other countries" have expressed interest.
- Anduril co-developed the extra-large AUV with Australia's defence scientists and is building the fleet under an A$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) contract. The AUKUS partners have pledged interchangeable payloads for undersea drones.
- Anduril also won a US$2.9 billion U.S. Navy contract earlier this month to build Virginia-class submarine components (CNA). We couldn't open the defence ministry release (server error), so the quotes come from Reuters via CNA.
4. U.S. Army Europe and Africa: 1st Armored Division integrates drone strike platoons at Combined Resolve; Ukrainian-designed Stork drones fly at Hohenfels
@USArmyEURAF posted: "Unmanned systems are rewriting modern warfare. Spc. Harry Clinton talks about how 1AD integrates drone strike platoons during Combined Resolve at JMRC."
- A DVIDS image dated Oct. 16 shows soldiers of 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment (7th Army Training Command) launching a STORK LR drone at Hohenfels. DVIDS calls Combined Resolve the Army's "premier warfighting and transformation laboratory."
- Defence Blog: the Stork is built in the Czech Republic by U&C UAS, founded by co-owners of Ukraine's DeViRo. It has a 3.4 m wingspan, weighs 14 kg, flies up to five hours and has a 135 km video link. A May 2026 contract (with ATP Gov) supplies U.S. Army Europe units, and output is about 500 drones a month.
- We haven't watched the 32-second video. Ties to PM #12 (7th ID).
5. A jet-powered Russian drone circles Lviv for about 20 minutes before air defenses engage it; debris damages 11 homes
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said (via Lviv Portal, in Ukrainian) that at 07:45 local time (12:45 AM ET) a jet-powered drone headed for Lviv and circled the city for about 20 minutes. It left the region, came back 5–6 minutes later, and was engaged by air defenses. The all-clear came at 08:51 (1:51 AM ET).
- Kyiv Post: debris in Zubra damaged 11 homes, a garage and eight cars, per regional head Maksym Kozytskyi. No injuries.
- In Volyn, about 15 drones targeted Kovel, Manevychi and Lutsk, leaving about 66,000 metering points without power (Kyiv Post).
- @NOELreports (6:03 AM ET) says the drone flew a "record 1,472 km" from Oryol, circled six times, and may have been on reconnaissance with "almost no warhead." That's unverified. Part of the overnight attack in #1.
6. Ukraine's 92nd Assault Brigade flies a wounded soldier out of the kill zone on a heavy hexacopter and calls it a world first
In "'This is a historic event': Ukraine's 92nd Assault Brigade uses heavy drone to fly wounded soldier off kill zone in world's first operation," Euromaidan Press, citing the brigade's Telegram, reports that a Gurzuf Defence heavy hexacopter flown by a 30th Mechanized Brigade operator evacuated a wounded 30th Brigade soldier. The position was too heavily mined and drone-hunted for ground robots to reach.
- The brigade: "The operation was successful — the wounded man was rescued!" A serviceman with the call sign Napalm: "This is a historic event, at least for our unit for sure." Gurzuf donated the drone free of charge.
- Euromaidan says ground robots logged about 112,000 logistics and evacuation missions from January through August 2026.
- AP reported days earlier that SkyFall's purpose-built StarGate medevac drone had entered testing (Oct. 16 PM). It's a specific new tactic, so it clears the POV rule. We didn't open the brigade's Telegram.
7. Russia claims 149 Ukrainian drones downed overnight across 13 regions and Crimea
Interfax reports that Russia's Defence Ministry said air defenses destroyed 149 Ukrainian drones overnight over Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Tula, Oryol, Lipetsk, Voronezh, Samara, Rostov, Tatarstan, Udmurtia and Crimea.
- On the other side, Ukraine's General Staff claims 1,636 Russian UAVs destroyed in the past day (relayed by @NOELreports).
- Both are claims by warring parties and haven't been independently verified.

How AUTOWAR25 ranks
Every edition, we scan official channels, news, industry, research, and social posts for the 25 most important developments in autonomous warfare: drones, counter-drone systems, uncrewed vessels and vehicles, and military AI.
Stories rank by source first:
- Official means governments, militaries, and their leaders speaking on the record.
- Premium/Press means established news outlets.
- Industry/Research means companies, think tanks, and published research.
- Social means notable posts from analysts, reporters, and practitioners.
Within each group, newer stories rank higher and engagement breaks ties. A company press release stays out of the top 10 until someone else reports on it. Ongoing marks a developing story, and Carryover marks one from a previous edition that's still moving. Claims from warring parties are labeled as claims, and anything we couldn't independently confirm is marked unverified.
AUTOWAR25 comes out at 7 AM and 4 PM ET. Follow @autowar25.
